Holy crap
ReplyDeleteWow!And Lou Tiano as "MURRY", my favorite credit.
ReplyDeleteDan Dailey looks just like John Kasich!
ReplyDeleteSorry to be nitpicky: it's Eddie >Bracken<.Otherwise what an array of actors! The Borgnine/Rickles matchup should have been taped and archived!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Corrected.
ReplyDeleteI saw Don Ameche and thought, "Eddie Bracken," and there he was. Arnold Stang never made it? Sterling Holloway? (We used to have Arnold's Waggish Tales LP in our house when I was a kid. You must have that one.)
ReplyDeleteI see Ernest Borgnine and Don Rickles and I think, "They had two Oscars?" They could have renamed it "The Ordinary Couple." "I Could See How Those Two Guys Could Get Along."
When cast for the Broadway production, Walter Matthau wanted to play Felix, because he considered it more of an acting challenge
DeletePaul
Thanks for the reminder Robert, Arnold Stang (and Milt Kamen) have been added.
ReplyDeleteIf science perfects time travel, I'm going to see the Jack Carter/Dick Shawn production.
ReplyDeleteLoving this! It inspired an email thread between a bunch of my friends, naming the productions we'd most like to have seen. As I was casting my vote for the Jack Klugman/Victor Spinetti (!) production, my autocorrect made a change that inspired THIS: https://twitter.com/legslambert/status/715219760938672128
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have seen the Art Carney / Don Knotts and/or Milt Kamen / Arnold Stang versions
ReplyDeleteWas there one that Jason Alexander & Martin Short did?
ReplyDeletePossibly, but not very odd.
ReplyDeleteAlexander and Short did The Producers in LA, not the Odd Couple-Michael Kraus
ReplyDeleteI saw the Jesse White-Roy Stuart version at the Ivar Theater in Hollywood. It was quite wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI remember sitting next to Roy Stuart in 1975 at Larry Parks's memorial at the Mark Taper. I was 14 and only knew him from Gomer Pyle at the time. I wanted to say something but was too shy.
DeleteAlexander and Short did reading/performances of The Odd Couple for a couple nights in LA. In 1970, Short and Eugene Levy starred in the play's first Canadian production.
ReplyDeleteThe Sherman Hemsley-starring version of Odd Couple happened in Stoneham, Massachusetts in 2003. I attended one of the performances, and Sherman was excellent as Oscar. Felix was supposed to be played by Pat Morita! But sadly Pat had to drop out of the production for health reasons very shortly before the show opened.
ReplyDeleteI hereby declare an immediate and complete cessation of scientific activity worldwide, so international scientific endeavor can be solely focused on building me a goddamned time machine to go back in time to see E.G. Marshall and Shelley Berman in The Odd Couple.
ReplyDeleteThere was benefit performance with Klugman and Randall at UCLA Royce Hall in 1990. Abe Vigoda was Murray, Bill Macy was Speed, Orson Bean was Roy, Dick VanPatten was Vinny. Mercedes Ruehl was one of the Pidgeon Sisters. ( I forgot the other one)
ReplyDeleteJamie Farr and William Christopher have done a lotta stuff together - they were cast together in Gomer Pyle, USMC, the movie, With Six You Get Eggroll, MASH and After MASH, as well as touring The Odd Couple
ReplyDeleteHarry Morgan went on The Dick Cavett Show and COMPLAINED about working with major turd-in-the-punchbowl Jesse White on THE ODD COUPLE.
ReplyDeleteMorgan complained about working with Jesse White to Tom Synder on The Tomorrow show.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite roles ever was as Vinny in a community theatre production with nobody famous. Almost choked on Felix's sandwich. Not ENOUGH mayonnaise...
